STUDENT WORK: VIDEO ESSAYS
Games courses give students a new format for analysis––the video essay. Video essays meet students where they are while allowing them to add creativity and personality to their critical argumentation. As a generation that takes YouTube and similar media for granted, students understand the conventions of video essays.
They recognize how images shape argument, for example, and the rhetorical value of audio quirks and well-timed humor. Here, the essay script forms only after hours of immersion in a narrative game. Students record games as they explore, then splice portions, like carefully chosen passages of a novel, with their essay text.
